Bicycle Popularity, Bicycle Injuries

As we Portlanders know bicycles have become one of the most common means of transportation in and around the city.

The popularity of bicycling is definitely at an all-time high, and with that peak also comes a surge in bike-related injuries. Emergency rooms and urgent care clinics, such as Portland Urgent Care, see thousands of victims of bicycle accidents every year, more than half of them between the ages of 25 and 64 and nearly 80 percent of them male. Most injuries are minor scrapes, abrasions, cuts and bruises; other injuries may include strained muscles, fractures and broken bones, as well as internal injuries.

Head trauma, including concussion, is one of the most serious injuries you can get while bicycling; the majority of bicycle-related deaths involve head trauma caused by collisions with motor vehicles. Wearing a properly fitted protective helmet is very important, especially for children.

Most medical emergencies seen here at Portland Urgent Care are of the minor variety.  Scrapes, cuts and abrasions are cleaned and treated with antiseptic before being covered with a breathable gauze bandage.  Fractures and broken bones will also come through our door and our friendly, experienced staff offers the best in compassionate care beginning with the x-ray, splinting and follow-up care.

Occasionally, we do see head injuries, usually in the form of unrecognized concussions.  If you notice symptoms of concussion, such as headaches, dizziness and balance problems, mood swings and changes in sleep patterns (sleeping more or less than usual), visit Portland Urgent Care immediately.
